Eric Schmidt, CEO de Google, se ha constituido en un gran defensor y promotor de la causa de la libertad de expresión y actuación virtual. Existen todavía varios países cuyos gobiernos ejercen control sobre el uso del internet en su población, como China por ejemplo.
El objetivo de Schmidt es conectar a la gente que vive en esos regímenes con el resto del mundo, pues afirma que, “cuando estas personas comiencen a indagar en otros sistemas abrirán su país al resto del mundo y esta censura digital podría acabar pronto pues a la larga los internautas acabarán haciéndose con el poder”.
Frente a las críticas a las que se enfrenta Google por estar involucrado en los escándalos de espionaje realizados por la Agencia Nacional de Seguridad de Estados Unidos, Schmidt dice que la solución será “encriptar a todos los internautas”, es decir, codificar los datos desprendidos de su actividad en la red.
